Nakusp celebrated Hockey Day in Canada with style this year, bringing in all the winter sporting events and mashing them together into one weekend of snowy fun.

Starting Friday night, the Midget Rep Falcons played against the Senior Falcons in an exhibition game to raise funds for the midgets provincials hopes.

They ended up raising more than $600 that night.

Saturday was the most packed in day of all, featuring a variety of activities focussing at the Nakusp and District Sports Complex.

This all began at 7:30 a.m. with the Nakusp Volunteer Fire Department’s pancake breafast.

People from all around the village came to partake, with all proceeds generated from that going towards the Canada Day fireworks.

At 10 a.m. sharp, Minor Hockey put on a street hockey tournament. These were split into two separate categories: Children and adults.

Games were 30 minutes each, and despite the slush and rain, people played through to the end.

Team Cordingly won it all for the kids show, and Team Smith took the adults trophy.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. the arena parking lot turned into a tailgate party.

Trucks blared music and barbeques were set up to cook up hot dogs and smokies. Pop and baked goods were also available during this time.

Inside the arena the Kootenay Wildcats played against Kelowna.

During the intermissions, people could peruse the silent auction, or get a nice meal cooked by the volunteer fire department who helmed the arena kitchen.

For a dose in variety, Nakusp Parkour showed up to give a demonstration from all their advanced practitioners. Chairs were set up to sit and enjoy the show, and afterwards the group took questions and even spent hours afterwards teaching anyone willing about parkour.

After the Wildcats game, the rink was taken over by Brianne McQuair and the Nakusp Figure Skating Club.

Tots, CanSkaters and STAR Skaters alike put on a show for the crowd, showing off all the moves they have been taught by renowned skating coach Sabrina Hinson.

Finally, the night ended with the Pee Wee Team playing against the Nakusp firemen.

At the same time, a curling bonspiel was taking place in the rink downstairs.

Brian Weatherhead organized the whole event, featuring multiple teams of different gender, ages and skill levels.

Thanks to Lisa Bateman and Andrea Coates for helping organize a lot of these activities, and having Hockeyville promotions still going strong!
