Joan Iris Krey was born on November 19, 1936 in Edmonton, AB to Carl and Ida Armbruster.

Joan passed away peacefully at her home in Burton at the age of 81, with her family by her side.

She is survived by her loving husband Karl, children Karl Jr. (Colleen), Bernie (Chris Ann) and Karen, grandchildren Bethany, Holly, Tirza and Noah. Joan is also survived by her siblings Joyce, Allen (Lena), Ruth (Rob), Roger (Marge), and Fay (Len).

Joan studied nursing at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary, and practiced in hospitals in Germany and Switzerland. She also practiced as a community health nurse on First Nations reserves in northern Alberta and Haida Gwaii.

In 1966, Joan married Karl Krey and moved to Burton, where they raised their three children. Joan will be remembered for her love of music, knitting, community involvement, church activities, organic gardening and food preservation, and foraging in the wild.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Jennifer Pond, Louella Cann and the Arrow Lakes Better at Home program, Cyndi Kryski and Nakusp Community Integrated Health Services, and the many friends and neighbours in Burton for their kindness and support.
