Barry Brian Mayer was born on April 11th, 1951 in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan to Hilda and Rudy Mayer. He attended elementary school in Bateman, Saskatchewan and high school in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan.


Barry took a Heavy Duty Mechanic trade course at Kelsey Institute in Saskatoon. After school Barry worked in various places in Alberta, British Columbia and the North West Territories during the winter months and would return to Saskatchewan in the spring where he would remain until fall for farming. Barry met Loretta in 1971. They were married in 1975. They have two children daughter Jennifer (Barrett Halkett) and a son Adam Mayer (Sarah McKenzie). Barry has two awesome grandchildren; Lekeisha and Caleb Halkett.


Barry and Loretta farmed in the Gravelbourg area until 1982. They then moved to Leoville to continue farming. In 1989, they moved off the farm to LaRonge and Barry took a position with Superior Propane as Branch Manager. Barry worked with Superior Propane, LaRonge, Saskatchewan for a number of years and then transferred to Co-op Propane, LaRonge, Saskatchewan. He served various communities in Northern Saskatchewan. The first load of propane to be delivered by land instead of water to Stony Rapids was delivered by Barry.


Barry had always dreamt of living in the mountains which lead Barry and Loretta to take up residence in Nakusp in 2006. Barry continued to work part time in Nakusp for HMC in the winter and the occasional cement delivery in the summer for Nakusp Redi Mix. Barry loved the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, and quad rides. Barry enjoyed having a laugh with his good friends, spending time with his grandchildren and teasing them. He is survived by his wife Loretta, daughter Jennifer (Barrett) Halkett, son Adam Mayer (Sarah McKenzie), and 2 grandchildren Lekeisha and Caleb Halkett, his mother Hilda Mayer-Roszell, sister Janice (Denis) Bourgeois, sister Holly (Will) Wiens, brother Miles (Janell) Mayer, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Barry was predeceased by father Rudy Mayer, aunts and uncles.


Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 1:00 PM from the Arrow Lakes Alliance Church with Pastor Warren Fulmore. Cremation followed the service. As an expression of sympathy family and friends may make donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC Kootenay Area #4 – 1551 Sutherland Ave. Kelowna, BC V1Y 9M9.
