Zoning bylaw concerning medical marijuana received

Highlights from the village council meeting of June 27.

At the village council meeting on June 13, council gave the first reading of zoning amendment bylaw 614-15.

This amendment would allow for medical marijuana commercial production facilities that have been authorized by the federal government and are located in the Agriculture Land Reserve (ALR) RU1 agricultural zone. The Agricultural Land Commission has determined medical marijuana is consistent with the definition of a farm use under the Agricultural Land Commission Act.

While local governments cannot prohibit medical marijuana from being grown within their territorial jurisdictions, they can set restrictions, such as how far back on a property or residential land. One concern is because the village is so small, the ALR is close to residential areas.

At the June 27 meeting, village council accepted a report which would provide council with additional information regarding the zoning amendment bylaw.

Local farm owners propose agri-tourism business

The owners of a local farm have proposed an agri-tourism business plan for their property. The business would open their farm to the general public to tour and interact with their animals, along with other activities and demonstrations including milking goats and providing education on animal care.

The farm encompasses 10 acres of land in the ALR with farm status, located on Shakespeare Road. The owners of the farm are currently engaged in agricultural activities including raising poultry, goats, sheep and rabbits. Eight of the ten acres are hay fields and, once cut, the fields are used for grazing land.

The property meets bylaw requirements and the village will submit a letter to the Agricultural Land Committee for the agri-tourism business.

Revyfest V Camaros in the Park presents letter of request

This will be the second year the Revyfest V Camaros Show & Shine event takes place in Nakusp. Last year’s event proved to be a success.

This year event organizers are asking for a road closure from the corner of 8th Avenue NW and Broadway Street W to the far north west parking lot entrance. The closure would be from mid morning to around 6 p.m., and would affect access of three home owners on Broadway St. for the duration of the event.

The Show & Shine event will take place on Aug. 21. About 70-80 participants are anticipated to take part this year.
