Vandalism is taking a dangerous turn in downtown Nakusp, where someone has for months been removing storm drain covers intended to protect the public from falls.

According to reports from the Village of Nakusp public works department, someone continues to remove the covers overnight, successfully dislodging the covers despite efforts to nail them down, said Nakusp Mayor Karen Hamling.

“It’s very dangerous – someone could break a leg,” she said.

The Village will apply for a Municipal Insurance Association grant of $3,000 to cover the cost of locking mechanisms designed specifically for storm drains, said CAO Linda Tynan.

“I don’t think people realize when they do this (remove the covers) the issues that it’s causing,” said Hamling.
