UPDATE: body recovered at Mirror Lake

RCMP have recovered the body of a 73-year-old male who failed to resurface while swimming on Sunday.

At approximately 12:15 p.m. Monday, August 19, the body of the 73-year-old male who was reported missing in Mirror Lake was located by the RCMP Dive Team.

The male was in approximately 45 feet of water, close to where he was last seen. The recovery proved more difficult than expected as the bottom of the lake is covered in a significant layer of mud, making visibility an issue.

The RCMP is still attempting to locate the next of kin, as such no name is being released. Foul play is not suspected and the case will be turned over to the BC Coroners Service.

Kaslo RCMP members and Emergency Health Services responded Sunday, Aug. 18 at approximately 1:00 p.m. to a report of a 73-year-old local area man, missing and presumed to have drowned in Mirror Lake.

Witnesses observed the male on the dock/dive platform. He subsequently dove into the lake and swam around for a short period of time (approximately 3-5 minutes). Witnesses reported that a faint call for help was heard and the elderly male was observed to be in distress. Two witnesses rendered assistance to the male but were unable to reach him before he had gone under the water. The male failed to resurface.

The RCMP Dive team has been called in and the file is under investigation.
