A familiar and popular member of the RCMP in Kaslo left the force June 30. Constable Doug Robinson, a 35-year veteran, will retire to Vernon after his final posting in Kaslo where he has served with some distinction for the past two years.
Robinson was born and raised in Kentville, NS and joined the RCMP in 1978. Residents of Kelowna, Sechelt, Sointula, Ft. Nelson, Vernon, Nakusp and laterally Kaslo all came to know him well. Robinson’s duty through his many years of service was all in uniformed policing.
Robinson retires to a home he bought in Vernon while stationed there in the 80s. At the conclusion of his years of service, Doug, who is an avid motorcyclist, said he plans to “go riding.” He has two grown children living in the Okanagan and is well remembered in the Vernon area. Kaslo’s loss is clearly Vernon’s gain.
He established himself as a “no BS cop” in Kaslo, sometimes to the chagrin of some superiors but with the full support of most of the people in Kaslo. His reputation gained him particular respect with the kids in the village, which in itself was no easy accomplishment.
Just one shining example of Robinson’s career was a comment made by an elder of the Sointula First Nation during his time posted to the tiny island community: “He is not a policeman, he is a Peace Officer.”
