The navigational lock at the Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam — the only one in Western Canada — will have four periods of closure between July 15 and November 25 for infrastructure upgrades.
The lock allows marine traffic to pass through the dam by raising and lowering boats between the Arrow Lakes Reservoir and the Columbia River.
The first closure will be from Monday, July 15 to Wednesday, July 31 inclusive.
"This closure is necessary to undertake significant infrastructure upgrades which will ensure the long-term, reliable and safe operation of the navigational lock," wrote Mary Anne Coules, stakeholder engagement advisor, community relations with BC Hydro in an email.
"On average, the lock is used five to six times daily, seven days a week, for commercial use. In addition, we average approximately six pleasure crafts per week. Pleasure craft usage generally increases during the summer months."
The lock will also be out of service during the following dates, which are subject to change: August 17 – September 2September 28 – October 18November 15 – November 25
Regular hours of operation outside of these closures is from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.
