The Remembrance Day ceremony at Nakusp Secondary School was a mostly student-run affair on Thursday Nov. 8.

Student emcees Kimberly Roberts and Liana Goodman welcomed veterans, dignitaries, students, and teachers before commencement of the hour-long assembly.

Tessa Wiseman led the NSS band in a performance before Roberts and Goodman continued with the program.

Nov. 8 is Indigenous Remembrance Day and a presentation on Indigenous involvment in the world wars followed.

Traditional readings of “In Flanders Fields,” and “We Shall Keep the Faith,” were given.

The emcees thanked the veterans before the playing of the Last Post and leading those in attendance in a moment of silence.

Veterans Brian Kennelly and Harvey Truax were invited up for the wreath laying, followed by dignitaries and student representatives from each grade in the placing poppies on the wreath.

The ceremony was followed by a lunch and tea in the NSS library, prepared by Christina Barisoff and the NSS food classes.

”I asked students if they would like to volunteer in the ceremony and was very pleased with the amount who wanted to,” said NSS principal Peter Gajda.

”It is important that they take the lead in remembering and honouring our veterans to engage fully.”
