Local dance instructor Nikki Cole aimed to entertain with songs, lots of laughter and a touch of risqué humour during her show “Naughty Puppets” at the Bonnington on Jan. 21.

Only about a third of the theatre’s seats were full, unusual for a show, but then again, this wasn’t a typical show for the Arrow Lakes District Arts Council (ALDAC).

To start with, Cole herself was not the main focus of the performance. Instead, all eyes were on a red haired, green eyed, purple skinned puppet who goes by the name of Stella.

Stella kicked the show off by serenading Cole to Adele’s “Someone Like You” with a bit of comedic phrasing thrown in.

Cole and Stella proved very early why the show was not recommended for those under the age of 18. Though there was nothing raunchy about the performance, topics such as threesomes and how dating an older person can be educational in the bedroom, were brought up.

No matter what the subject was, Cole and Stella had the audience in stitches.

“I thought it was really awesome,” said Keyly Davidson. “I love that people are doing this kind of stuff.”

Cole wasn’t the only one to show off their puppeteer skills that night. Resident Danny Wiebe also took to the stage with his puppets Leroy and Richard.

This was the first time Wiebe has performed with another puppeteer and it was something he really enjoyed.

“It was neat to do it with another puppeteer, and the audience was in the mood to laugh,” he said. “It was great.”

Not only did the audience laugh hard during the show, they also took part in the show.

Throughout the evening several games were played which required audience participation, including a puppet dating game where audience members had to create a personality for the puppet they chose to use.

One thing that impressed both Cole and Wiebe was the amount of local talent in and around the village, and the importance of having an opportunity to showcase that talent.

“I think lots of times there are hidden gems in the valley we have,” said Wiebe. “It’s neat for the people to have the opportunity to showcase some of their talents.”

Cole agrees.

“There is so much amazing local talent, and just being able be a part of the show with Danny Wiebe. I’m super happy that the Arts Council has put together all of the local talent.”
