A human-caused wildfire southwest of the community of Krestova was discovered on May 3.

The Cant Creek fire was considered to be under control two days later by the BC Wildfire Service.

The fire is estimated to be 3 hectares in size. The Southeast Fire Centre says the fire was a smouldering ground fire with a slow rate of spread.

An initial attack crew of four firefighters began fighting the fire the evening it was discovered and a unit crew of 22 firefighters was assigned to it the following day.

“We watched in horror from our homes below it,” said Krestova area resident Pam Malekow. “But those two initial attack crews did an amazing job at getting it contained. We can’t thank them enough for saving us.”

No structures were damaged by the fire.

The fire centre says that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
