So much snow fell that schools were closed for the first time in over a decade.

Bill Crater plows snow from his driveway after a heavy snowfall in the region. So much snow fell the school board closed all schools in the district. This is the first time over a decade that this has happened.

The weather outside over the last few days in the region has certainly been frightful.

Many residents in the area can’t remember the last time they received about two to three feet of the white stuff in such a short period of time.

“We have had major snow here for sure,” said Brendalee Morgan. “Because we also live out of town and up high, I do recall it being like this a lot. Because we already had the one big dump, and then a bit of a break, and now we have a big dump again, maybe this is a bit different.”

Different indeed.

Because so much snow fell in such a short period of time, all schools in the district were closed Monday, something that hasn’t happened in years.

The decision was made early in the morning by Terry Taylor, superintendent for School District 10, and Art Olson, manager of transportation and operations for the school district.

“We assessed the road conditions, and we were advised by YRB that secondary roads were not going to be plowed and highways were going to have some challenges to get the work done,” said Taylor. “The call that we made this morning was that student safety was something that had to be taken into consideration, as well as employee safety.”

Taylor has worked in the district for several decades and said the last time schools had to be closed for the day because of weather was about 12 years ago.

While some may not like the Morgan loves it.

“It’s a lot of extra work, but I think it’s one of the best exercises you can do,” she said. “It’s good for your legs, good for your back, good for your arms. People complain about it, but it is winter.”
