Mushroom pickers are breathing a little easier after talks with True North forestry workers ended in logging changes being made.
Jesper Nielsen of NACFOR said after talks with local mushroom pickers such as Joe Kabatoff, Lisa Bjraganson and the Dahlans that they will be reducing the total logging by about 11 hectares.
They have also re-distributed where they will be harvesting.
“They’re in far less high priority areas now,” Nielsen told the Arrow Lakes News.
Lastly, they have agreed to increase the “buffer width” between the proposed strips. This means a wider growth space will be left, allowing more mushrooms to grow.
The style of logging NACFOR is set to do would leave strips of forest land to allow mushroom growth to continue. With a wider strip, this will make for healthier mushrooms.
Nielsen said the discussions were all very civil and that although logging will still be happening in the Fosthall area, he hopes this will reduce the impact that the company recognizes.
Name released in Retallack death
The woman killed in a snowboarding accident last month while staying at Retallack Lodge east of New Denver has been identified as Maitreya (Sarah) Burrell.
The Nelson resident was among a group of a dozen people on a backcountry ski-tour. The tragedy occurred on December 29 as they were descending their last run of the day in an area known as Stovepipe in the Stenson Creek drainage.
RCMP say at one point Burrell’s boyfriend noticed she was missing. When their guide returned up the hill and used his avalanche transceiver to locate her, she was found head down in the snow.
She was pulled unconscious and wasn’t breathing. CPR was performed, but she was later pronounced dead in hospital in Kaslo.
It’s believed Burrell, 32, fell backwards. She was an experienced snowboarder.
