It would have been foolhardy to not be at the Nakusp Royal Canadian Legion on April 1.

The Arrow Lakes District Arts Council (ALDAC) hosted its much-anticipated dinner and dance, titled Fools For Love.

The title was an appropriate one. Besides the fact that it took place on April Fool’s Day, the dance was originally supposed to happen on Valentine’s Day weekend, but factors beyond anyone’s control caused the event’s postponement.

“Everything that could have gone wrong had,” said Andreea Myhal, a member of ALDAC. “We got a ton of snow, so the band couldn’t leave Vancouver; the bus wouldn’t leave because the Coquihalla was closed for a couple of days. The food and the bookings were on hold because we didn’t know if we were going to have attendees; it was hard for people to get out of their own driveways inside the perimeter of the village, let alone come from anywhere else.”

The Legion hall was awash in red and white to go with the original theme.

The event was sold out and the din of chatter in the hall was almost a little overwhelming at some points.

There were plans to host some kind of event like this last year, but things didn’t exactly work out.

“Last spring Debbie Jensen was requesting we do a spring fling dance,” said Myhal. “She was contemplating having it at the arena, but I kiboshed that based on the math of how many people we would need, how many tickets we would have to have and all the costs of running it.”

Myhal promised Jensen ALDAC would host one this year, but Jensen would not get the chance to see it. She passed away in February after battling cancer. Myhal said she dedicated the evening to her memory.

The evening’s entertainment was provided by Blackberry Wood, a band based out of Vancouver. The group had people up and moving on the dance floor, playing a variety of music including some waltzes, a zombie love song and more.

Those in attendance were really happy with the dinner and dance.
