The Nakusp Hot Springs trail will be getting some TLC after the Village received a $42,000 grant from the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada (PacifiCan).
The $90,000 project will also make use of a $38,400 grant from Columbia Basin Trust, with the Village contributing the remaining $9,600.
Work will include repairing erosion and improving conditions along the trail from the hot springs facility to the source. The Village will also build elevated pathways to protect the springs and its surrounding ecosystem, and install signs recounting its history and cultural significance.
The project is set to begin late spring.
The Village is one of 14 organizations in BC’s Southern Interior to draw from a pot of $2 million through PacifiCan’s Tourism Growth Program. The program is investing in tourism across BC to enhance outdoor recreation, attract visitors to smaller communities, and drive local economic growth.
Other organizations in the wider area receiving PacifiCan grants are CAPOW Guiding near Revelstoke ($250,000 for backcountry hiking infrastructure), Black Jack Ski Club in Rossland ($250,000 lodge improvements, signage, and rentals), and the City of Kelowna ($174,000 to expand air service at Kelowna International Airport).
PacifiCan is a federal economic development agency dedicated to British Columbia.
