Mark your calendars for the second annual Halloween event, happening at the Royal Canadian Legion in Nakusp.
On Thursday, October 31, from 4 to 8 pm, all are welcome to a free, family evening in the Legion Hall. The hall will be decked out with lots of decorations, said volunteer Tammy Glentworth, with a graveyard and other spooky additions. There will be candy and popcorn for the kids, a Halloween movie showing, music, and lots of fun to be had.
Leading up to Halloween on Saturday, October 26 at 7 pm, there will be a free, adults-only Halloween party in the Legion Hall and Lounge. The evening will kick off with the Witch Dance, a choreographed dance akin to Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ that’s easy to pick up and join in with, said Glentworth. Shirley will lead karaoke and six trophies will be up for grabs for best costumes.
Glentworth has always loved Halloween.
“It’s been something I’ve always done… I’ve been throwing Halloween parties for a long time in my yard, but I’d never get the kids out,” she said.
Last year, she roused a group of volunteers and brought the Halloween spirit to the Legion. A few individuals privately funded the event and over 150 community members of all ages attended. Glentworth was happy to provide a safe and warm place to enjoy Halloween, as the weather was poor. Attendees raved about the décor.
“When we opened it up for the kids, it was so awesome and was received really well,” she said. “We have such a wonderful community and these sorts of events are so important to our community.”
This year, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 20, will sponsor the event, which is 100% volunteer-driven. The Legion recently received a Nakusp and Area K Recreation Commission No. 4 grant for $1,800.
“That was the one thing that I did not want, is for anyone to have to pay to go in,” said Glentworth. “I’m really excited to offer more for the kids.”
Preparations are moving forward rapidly, she said, and Halloween will be here before we know it.
“I can’t say enough about our wonderful community and the amazing volunteers who are so willing to participate in creating this event again this year,” she said. “We are really hopeful that we can offer this annually.”
Glentworth encourages interested volunteers to contact the Legion to help out.
