One of the ball fields at Kathy Pedersen Park will be getting some bright new LED lights thanks to the Nakusp Mixed Slow Pitch Society. The society received two sizable grants to complete the upgrades, which also include revitalizing the electrical system and installing new poles.

A $10,000 Community Development grant and a $20,000 ReDi grant will be put towards the $40,000 project. Society President Damin Devlin is hoping the remaining $10,000 can be recouped via donations. He is aiming for the upgrades to be finished by the end of the summer.

The current electrical system is connected to the arena, but the project will see a shed constructed to house the new system independently. Devlin’s company, Arrow Lakes Electric Ltd., will complete the upgrades with help from volunteers.

Stella-Jones, owner of the Nakusp Pole Yard, is donating new poles to replace the old, weathered light posts.

The upgrades won’t get in the way of the society’s 39th annual Summer Splash tournament during August long weekend. Two to three local teams will compete against 17 from out of town—Fruitvale, Castlegar, Revelstoke, Kelowna, Calgary, and Golden, to name a few.

In operation since 1985, the Nakusp Mixed Slow Pitch Society fosters camaraderie, sportsmanship, and relaxation through the game of slow pitch softball. The season runs from mid-May to mid-July, and welcomes men and women of all skill levels.
