A generous donation from Nakusp's Legion will enable more families of children with disabilities to get out for a weekend of unforgettable camping this summer on Kootenay Lake.

President Harvey Truax of the Royal Legion's Branch 20 presented a $500 donation to and  Terri McLeod the board chair of Diverse Family Roots Society on Friday, May 2.

Diverse Family Roots executive director Ben Postmus told Black Press Media this funding will go toward the grassroots organization's Riondel Reset this Aug. 21 to 24, an event that unites dozens of families with diverse needs through a range of performances and activities.

"We couldn't have done it without the support of the community," Postmus said. "We're there to celebrate inclusion and diversity."

This year, the Riondel Reset will include bonfires, yoga, sound healing therapy, belly dancing, massages, live music and kayaking. Kootenay Savings Credit Union has also contributed $1,500 to book out half the campground, which is located in Riondel right off the eastern shores of Kootenay Lake.

"Last year, a dad and his daughter came from Surrey," Postmus remarked, adding that 32 pancake breakfasts were served. "It's pretty cool."

Families of all ages interested in joining the Riondel Reset this August can email diversefamilyroots@gmail.com to register.

Launched in the fall of 2023, Diverse Family Roots provides a support network for hundreds of families around the Kootenays every year. Throughout the months, it allocates 30 family stewards to households across southeastern B.C.
