Fans of the CBC in Nakusp will soon be able to hear their favourite programs with much higher quality of sound.

The public broadcaster is planning to switch the current AM transmitter to FM sometime later this year.

Details are still up in the air, says CBC BC Manager of Communications Jennifer Rhyne. There’s no word on the power of the transmitter, if both Radio 1 and Radio 2 will be available, or the location of the new signal on the FM dial.

Those details have to be worked out in applications to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. Those are underway now.

CBC currently broadcasts to Nakusp at 900 AM, but the signal barely reaches outside of the village limits.

The Nakusp transmitter is one of the few remaining AM transmitters in the area as the corporation has been slowly converting to FM for the last few decades.

While both FM and AM radio signals experience changes in amplitude, they are far less noticeable on FM.
