On Wednesday evening a large number of the young men of the community gathered in Leary’s Hall to form a club and practice boxing. Judging by the start, keen interest will be taken in this sport. Messrs. Cecil Sharp and George Martin are the instructors. - Feb. 6.

1961: Curling club makes pro show

Three Nakusp Legion curling teams made excellent showing, against opposition that has won many high class events, including B.C. Championships and the Canadian Open Championship.

The Ray Donnelly foursome, skipped by Harold Osborne, met three well experienced teams and held each one ot within two points.

Howard Turner’s team lost their first game to Bateman of Rossland, won their second over Dunlop and then, in one of the best games of the spiel, lost a near one to last year’s B.C. champs, Milt Ryalls, by one point.

Bert Bowerman’s team won its first fame easily, then won the second in a close on over the highly regarded veteran Mathieson of Trail. In this third game, they met the eventual “B” trophy winner and finalist for the Kootenay Championship, Bill Forrest of Trail.

2001: Vandals blast rest area with stolen dynamite

The rest area at Ione Creek was the site of a dynamite blast last week.

On February 5, the Nakusp detachment of the RCMP received a complaint from the Ministry of Transportation and Highways advising that the rest room at the Falls Creek (Ione Creek) rest area had been damaged by an explosive device.

The investigation determined that the explosive device consisted of two sticks of dynamite and the device was detonated inside the rest room resulting in serious damage to the building.

It was determined that the dynamite used was stolen from a licensed contractor.

On February 8, 19 year old Gabriel Koert Dieterman of Nakusp was charged with using an explosive device to cause damage to property, mischief over $5000 and theft under $5000.
