Winlaw Recycling Depot to close at end of March

The depot falls short of recommended material processed per hour

The Winlaw Recycling Depot will close permanently on March 31.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay says it will close the Winlaw Recycling Depot for good on March 31.

The closure was approved by RDCK board of directors following a study last year that recommended the move as part of a regional review meant to improve operational efficiencies and find cost-effective measures.

In a March 18 statement, the RDCK said the Winlaw depot accepts less than the recommended 50 kilograms of material per hour of operation. Users will instead be directed to use either the Slocan Transfer Station (8875 South Slocan Road) or the Crescent Valley Recycling Depot (1285 Highway 6).

Closing the depot will save an estimated $40,885 in annual costs.

The RDCK said more changes related to tipping fee cost recovery and operational efficiencies will be considered this year.
