In 2024, DriveBC expanded its traffic monitoring network with 22 new cameras, adding 37 new views to help motorists travel safely, particularly during the challenging winter months.

Drivers planning trips on B.C.’s roads can now consult the enhanced DriveBC network, which features 503 cameras delivering 1,037 real-time views of road and weather conditions.

The province explains that ministry crews strategically place webcams across B.C., guided by input from residents, contractors, and weather experts.

One of those new installations in 2024 was at the Paulson Summit on Highway 3.

The installation features a west-facing camera paired with new weather sensors.

This remote, off-grid system relies on solar power and satellite communication, serving as a model for future installations in isolated areas.

Other new views include: Highway 1 at 216 Street, offering west and east views of the busy Langley corridor in a rapidly growing region; Highway 14 at West Shore Parkway, providing north, west, and east views, complementing the Highway 14 corridor improvements between Langford and Sooke; and Pine Pass on Highway 97, delivering a north view of the Powder King Mountain Resort access road. This camera replaces an outdated unit that failed due to obsolete components.

Many DriveBC cameras use pan-tilt-zoom technology, offering multiple views from a single location.

In urban areas like the Lower Mainland, intersection cameras provide images from four or more angles.

Privacy is a priority; for example, a Highway 3A camera includes pixelated masking to prevent capturing private property.

DriveBC’s platform provides comprehensive travel information, including border delays, inland ferry schedules, ongoing construction updates, and winter driving tips.

The ministry is also seeking feedback on its redesigned web portal, set to launch next year. The new site will feature a simplified map, enhanced notifications, and improved mobile usability.
