Two West Kootenay organizations are among the first recipients of the inaugural Outdoor Recreation Fund of BC.

The Slocan Valley Rail Trail Society and the Salmo Valley Trail Society will each have funding for trail work after their proposals were accepted. Thirty grants totalling $250,711 were handed out by the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC to organizations across the province.

In the Slocan Valley, $6,400 will be spent to maintain winter access to the rail trail for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and walking over the 46-kilometre gravelled section. Snow clearing will also take place on four km of paved trail, as well as parking maintenance.

Salmo meanwhile will use $10,000 to reroute the True Blue trail for user safety, increasing accessibility through the Mama Bear extension, expanded parking at Hooch Creek and community engagement.
