The Nakusp and Area Youth Network got sophisticated with a pool tournament.

Not that the basement location on Broadway Street wasn’t already classy, but a pool tournament brings an air of grown-up to the youth space.

Teams of two went head-to-head on Aug. 1. The top two winning teams got prizes like a pink flamingo and donut floaties, and Save-On Foods $10 gift cards.

The youth network previously put on pool tournaments with a great turn out, and this one was no different.

Six youths entered the tourney, ate nachos and held healthy competition among friends. Coordinator Kiara McLean liked the idea of bringing something to the youth centre that older youth could enjoy as well. One of the 18-year-old youths suggested the pool tournament. “I appreciate organized events, such as the pool tournament, for their ability to build on youths’ confidence, capacity for team work, and multi-aged fun,” said McLean.

A round-robin bracket was made and every team played each other once and then a second time to see who carried the most wins. At the end of the night whichever team held the most W’s beside their team name, won first place and first pick of the prizes.

Youth winners Daniel and Ethan both chose the floatie’s.

Sup Club, Drop In and Nerd Night see a loyal number of youth, but throughout the summer with extra funding, the youth network can facilitate other activities for all youth ages 12-18. Other events suggested have been videogame night, movie night, jam night and more Anime with Amy as well as Makeup with Morgan.

McLean wanted to make the pool tournament something youth could hang their hat on and have a show for their hard work. This was one of the few events where prizes were included.

Youth network events are usually non-competitive and fair to everyone, but organizers deciced to add a twist by introducing some competition.
