On July 9, 2017, the first Women’s Wellness Day was held at the Old Firehall in Nakusp.

The doors opened at 8:30 a.m. for those early participants who wanted to visit with friends in the crowd before the event officially began, and started with breakfast, a traditional First Nations’ opening, and a keynote address. The first of four breakout sessions was held before the lunch catered by Nakusp Broadway Deli Bistro Chef Leeson, with the other three workshops taking up the afternoon.

The owner and operator of Kootenay Kombucha Lavinia Lidstone was there, serving samples of two of her concoctions on tap, as were Lynda Tamasi and a table full of Spiritwood offerings, as well as information about Reiki.

The workshops were distributed between four spaces, and covered food skills, reflexology and relaxation, yoga, sexual and relationship health, art therapy and even financial planning. There was some overlap between the workshops, which gave this event a feeling of fullness, as various presenters tackled some of the same topics from different angles.

The organizer, Carlee Hughes, has been involved in several community projects that ooze caring and are meant to connect the community. Hughes holds a self-fulfilling wish for wellness in our community. She stated, “Usually we educate about the negative effects of violence. The opposite of violence is wellness and peacefulness, so I wanted to focus on that instead.” She set out to educate to achieve a community of wellness.

Repeats are perfectly plausible, judging by the attendees’ excited response of spontaneous applause, cheers and tears, as well as words of thanks to the organizers and presenters.
