Sandra Watt said she was taken aback by the honour of being named Rotary Citizen of the Year.

Nakusp’s Rotary Citizen of the Year was taken aback a little by the honour.

“I’m overwhelmed by surprise,” said Sandra Watt on Sunday, after receiving word of her nomination. “I’m just the face of a million other people working together, right? There are so many hard working people, I am just one of them.”

That’s not what her nominator thought, however. Dorraine Gustafson pointed out Watt’s tireless work on the breakfast and lunch program at the high school, and her work with local sports teams.

Watt, she said, is a person who puts the needs of youth in the community first in her life.

“She’s everywhere, making things happen for the kids of Nakusp,” wrote Gustafson. “She’s always quietly in the background, not expecting any recognition.”

“She’s a super-involved parent and is actively involved in helping other people’s children feel accepted and involved.”

The Rotary hands out the annual honour to recognize a person or persons who have “displayed significant contribution to the community”.

Watt wasn’t the only citizen honoured on the weekend.

A “caring, selfless and loving person” who helps seniors with their housekeeping and yard work, Joan Samu was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Her nominators noted her caring for the community’s elders, and her role as a ‘backbone of her church” in helping our community.

“To me and many others Joan is an ‘Earth Angel’,” wrote Joyce Marchischak. “I am proud to be one of her many friends.”

A young woman who volunteers with the local ski hill and figure skating club, Kylie Waterfield was recognized with a Youth Achievement Award.

“Kylie is a mentor and role model for younger and peer skiers and racers in the community,” said nominator Susan Clift. “She brings a wealth of experience to our community. She is always willing to inspire all with her quiet, humble attitude.”

The Rotarians will hold a banquet on May 12 at the Legion to honour this year’s winners.
