Nicholas Ioan Llewelyn-Smith died after a hiking accident on Slocan Lake.
The incident happened last week, but police only issued a statement Wednesday.
At about 1 a.m. Friday they responded to a report of a missing 30-year-old Argenta man at Bannock Point, about five kilometres south of Silverton.
Police, BC Ambulance, New Denver fire and rescue, and Nelson Search and Rescue responded and learned Llewelyn-Smith fell while hiking in the dark near the edge of the bluff.
Just after daylight, his body was found at the bottom of the bluff, indicating a fall of about 75 metres.
“It was determined he and a group of friends were camping in the area, when the male, who was wearing a headlamp, decided to go hiking in the dark,” Sgt. Darryl Little said.
Poor lighting, hazardous terrain, and alcohol appear to be factors, Little said.
Llewelyn-Smith was an Australian citizen but was living in Argenta.
