New Denver was recognized last week as the 31st BC municipality to achieve carbon neutrality in corporate operations. Mayor Ann Bunka is seen here receiving a certificate from Regional District of Central Kootenay chair John Kettle on behalf of the Carbon Neutral Kootenays initiative.

Bunka says when New Denver signed on to the BC Climate Action Charter, the village had already done a significant amount of work to reduce its emissions by retrofitting its office and downsizing its vehicles. Consequently, it only cost a few hundred dollars to buy offsets from the Darkwoods Conservation Project.

“We’re working towards [true] zero and don't have very far to go,” Bunka said.
