Nakusp kids win big in legion art contest

We had a total of 230 entries from Nakusp Elementary and Secondary Schools in the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Poster and Literacy Contest this year.

We had a total of 230 entries from Nakusp Elementary and Secondary Schools in the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Poster and Literacy Contest this year.

At the branch level we give first, second and third place prizes for each grade. We then take the first place winner from the grades and judge again as Primarcy (grades 1–3), Juniors (grades 4–6), Intermediates (grades 7–9) and Seniors (grades 10–12).

We had 13 first place winners sent to the West Kootenay Zone level. There are nine branches in the zone. Out of these winners, we had 12 win that competition.

Nakusp Elementary School first place winners:

Rhys McLeod, Cole Lythgoe, Lauren Sapietis, Ivy Tourand, Maia Smith-Garnett, Samantha Baiko.

Nakusp Elementary School West Kootenay Zone Winners:

-Maia Smith-Garnett, first place in the junior essay division.

-Rhys McLeod, second place in the junior black and white poster division.

-Ivy Tournad, third place in the junior colour poster division.

-Cole Lythgoe, first place in the intermediate poem division.

-Lauren Sapietis, second place in the primary colour poster division.

-Samantha Baiko, second place in the junior poem division.

Nakusp Secondary School first place winners:

Kristina Grimm-Hornby, Amanda Tater, Hailey Spavor, Avery Spavor, Steven Tays, Amy Surina, Nicole Hawe, Chilali Berisoff.

Nakusp Secondary School West Kootenay Zone winners:

-Kristina Grimm-Hornby, first place in the senior essay division.

-Hailey Spavor, second place in the intermediate essay division.

-Avery Spavor, second place in the intermediate black and white poster division.

-Amy Surina, second place in the senior black and white poster division.

-Nicole Hawe, first place in the senior poem division.

-Chilali Berisoff, first place in the senior colour poster division.
