The Nakusp and Area Youth Network was able to provide programming to youth in 2023/ 2024 with the generous donation of the Nakusp and Area Community Forest and Kootenay Savings Community Foundation.

The Nakusp and Area Youth Network (NAYN) continues to make a significant impact on the local community, creating opportunities for youth to engage in creative expression, environmental stewardship, and exciting recreational activities.

One of the most exciting ongoing projects is the creation of a Youth Mural focused on inclusivity. The mural, which is still currently being painted, is a two-part artwork that reflects the heart of the region and the youth. The first section features a stunning depiction of mountain landscapes, symbolizing the area where the youth live and the mountains surrounding the Nakusp community. The second part of the mural is a celebration of individuality, where youth are given 100% freedom to express their personal interests, dreams, and identities. This section allows participants to paint what makes them unique, creating a vibrant collage of creativity and self-expression. This mural stands as a visual representation of the youth’s diverse talents and their deep connection to their community.

NAYN’s dedication to empowering youth extends beyond artistic projects. This year, the organization successfully completed a clothing upcycling drive that not only taught youth valuable skills but also benefited the environment. Participants were taught how to repair, upcycle, and decorate clothing, learning techniques that promote sustainability and creativity. Some of the upcycled clothing can now be purchased at the Wildflower Co. in Nakusp, B.C., with a percentage of the proceeds being donated to an environmental charity chosen by the youth. The remaining funds are reinvested into future youth events, ensuring that the program continues to benefit local young people.

Currently, the Coordinator and Facilitator at NAYN are working to build a community closet! This closet will contain free clothing for youth, parents, or people in need of clothing for our diverse weather in the community. This initiative not only addresses environmental concerns but also encourages a culture of giving and community support among the youth.

This year, NAYN has been actively involved in organizing exciting recreational events for the community. One of the highlights of this year was a large-scale Nerf gun fight, hosted in collaboration with many local youth and supported by the Nakusp Arena, which generously provided the space for the event. A huge thank you to the partnership with Eagle Small Motor Repairs, the event also featured essential safety equipment, ensuring that participants could enjoy the action in a safe environment. The Nerf gun fight was a massive success, drawing youth together for a fun, high-energy event that fostered teamwork and friendly competition.

Looking ahead, NAYN is excited to expand its programming to the Fauquier area. Monthly events will take place in February, March, and April, providing opportunities for youth in Fauquier to get involved in NAYN’s activities and connect with their peers. Additionally, two special events will be held in Fauquier in January, offering a chance for even more youth to engage in the exciting and diverse programs that NAYN offers.

Through these initiatives, the Nakusp and Area Youth Network continues to foster a positive, inclusive environment for youth to develop skills, express themselves, and make meaningful contributions to their community. With a focus on creativity, sustainability, and fun, NAYN’s programming has become an integral part of life for young people in Nakusp and the surrounding areas. As the year progresses, NAYN is committed to expanding its reach and impact, ensuring that the voices of youth continue to be heard and celebrated.
