June 17 marked the ninth year running that Cheryl Black and Coldwell Banker Rosling Real Estate have hosted the local Family Free Fishing event at the Nakusp marina, with support from Nakusp Overwaitea Foods.

Province-wide, the event has been going on twice that long, with the Family Fishing Society of BC enabling everyone to come out and try free freshwater fishing for 18 years now to coincide with Father’s Day weekend.

The event saw some of the regulars take out a new fishing buddy out, which Black is very thankful for. As well, Glen and Gail Olson’s continued support of this event, which ran the entire afternoon and ended with a free barbecue, helps ensure other people have access to learning about local waters and the basics of fishing.

This year, Tracy Lasseter won first place with a four-pound, eight-ounce ling cod, following in her husband’s first prize winning footsteps from last year.

Keeping it in the family, Dustin Lasseter won third place in the children’s category with a three pound, three ounce ling cod, and Daniel Lasseter came fourth with a three-pound, two-ounce ling cod, tied with Jonah Fizzard and Dolly Varden.

Rounding out the children’s top three were Savannah Olson in second place with a three-pound, 13-ounce squaw, and Noah Fizzard in first place with a six-pound, six-ounce rainbow trout.

“Kids once again outfished the adults,” said Black who gives out awards to the top four in the children’s category and the top placed adult.
