Gay Anne (nee Hendrixson) HOUSTON

Gay Anne Houston nee: Hendrixson, died of cancer (gastric lymphoma) in Trail Hospital on August 1, 2004 at the age of 75.

Gay was born and grew up in New York and graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1950. Appalled by the atomic bombing of the Japanese civilian population she taught English to high school and college students in Nagasaki from 1950 to ’53. While completing a MA in Social Work at Boston University, Gay met and married Bill Houston in 1955. They had two daughters, Alice and Judy (Lucks). After a career in social work in the U.S. Gay immigrated to Canada in 1978, founding and directing the New Denver Nursery School until her retirement in 1997. Gay loved the mountains, nature, hiking and cross-country skiing. She will be sadly missed by her family, companion Eric and her many friends in the New Denver/Nakusp area. A memorial gathering celebrating Gay’s life will be held at the Silverton Gallery on Sunday, October 3, 2004 at 2 p.m.
