Hello Nakusp! My name is River Fantuz, currently working with Arrow Lakes News for my student work experience through Lucerne Secondary School.

Originally growing in Calgary, Alta., I moved to New Denver in Grade 9. I am currently enrolled in Grade 12, and planning on a career in either journalism, or teaching.

I represent my town of New Denver in the B.C. ambassadorship program, which gives students across B.C. the opportunity to travel throughout the province, meet new people, and increase the understanding of the fundamental skills one already possesses.

In my free time I love to read, write, and take pictures; and I am teaching myself to play the guitar.

I often collect and utilize as much information as possible when tackling any subject at hand, and can easily identify with multiple points of view.

I have previously worked at the community paper based out of New Denver, the Valley Voice, and chose to work here at Arrow Lakes News to obtain a broader perspective on the industry and a better understanding of what it’s like to work in the field of journalism.

My initial interest in journalism stems from my childhood. I loved to collect and record information on the world at large in any way I could, typically by scribbling my interviews with the fence post down in unintelligible pink crayon in my Batman notebook.

As I got older, English class was the only one where I could do large amounts of work with little distractions.

Today, a majority of my free time is spent collecting and recording information that can be used later on through my journal and my pictures. I love sharing info, and teaching people new things.

My career choices are journalism and teaching for those very reasons, and I would love to place the same inspiration for learning and for writing as my teachers gave to myself so many years ago.

After all, it is the knowledge that we possess that comprises a part of who we are.
