New Nakusp Council holds inaugural meeting December 5
The first new Nakusp Council meeting was short and sweet, consisting mainly of the swearing in of the councillors and mayor for their term in office, and their committee selections.
Tom Zeleznik joined veteran councillors Ulli Mueller and Joseph Hughes for the official swearing in of council and returning mayor Karen Hamling in a special meeting on Dec. 6. Guy Duchaine, the other new councillor, had been sworn in earlier due to business that kept him away for the inaugural day.
Once they had taken their oaths of office, the councillors and mayor signed themselves up for various committees. Karen Hamling will take on Community Health, Downtown/Park Select Committee, Ferry Advisory Committee, RDCK Director, Music Festival Committee and Labour Relations.
Councillor Duchaine’s business background will serve him well as part of the Music Fest Committee, Nakusp and Area Development Board (NADB), and the Chamber of Commerce.
Councillor Hughes, whose family was in attendance for his swearing in, renews his commitments to the Recreation and Hot Springs Commissions, as well as the Music Festival Committee.
Councillor Mueller will join Hughes on the Hot Springs Commission, and will also contribute to the Library, and RDCK Alternate/Resource Recovery. She will also be the council liaison to the Tourism Advisory and Age Friendly Committees.
Councillor Tom Zeleznik will kick off his political career participating in the Community Forest, the Provincial Emergency Program, and with NADB.
For now, the councillors and mayor can rest, with the first full meeting taking place in January.
