The Nakusp Canadian Legion hall is looking a little fresher these days, after a series of renovations this fall tackled to some much-needed exterior work.

“We replaced the shingles on the front, fixed the stairs all around the building, and painted the doors,” among other jobs, said Legion President Harvey Truax. “A busy fall.”

The $30,000 in work was funded by a grant from the Columbia Basin Trust and was completed by local contractors Brian Weatherhead Contracting and Arrow Lakes Choice Contracting.

The Depression-era community hall has seen a lot of renovations in the last few years. Truax says close to $100,000 has gone to replacing acoustic tiles in the main hall ceiling, new chairs, tables and other functional furniture, and exterior improvements.

Truax says funding permitting, the Legion plans to paint the exterior, repair the damaged flagpole in the front of the building and replace the aging signage in 2018.

There are about 300 Legion members in Nakusp, and the facility is used throughout the year by numerous community groups.
