Nakusp Secondary School bands were joined last week by an orchestral group from Kalamalka Secondary School for a joint concert in the high school gym. Arrow Lakes school district band teacher Patrick MacGibbon, was pivotal in making arrangements for the annual traveling Kalamalka Secondary School Mystery Tour to make a stop in Nakusp.

“Brian McMahon, the band director for Kalamalka is my good friend and we have played together for many years in various bands; he called me up and suggested that we get together and do a joint concert,” MacGibbon said.

Nakusp is just one of the stops for the traveling musicians who, as the tour name suggests, don’t know what venue they play at next.

“Every year I do this Mystery tour, so called because I don’t tell my band where we are going until they are getting on the bus,” McMahon explained to the audience.

Musical selections were performed back and forth between the different grade groups of Nakusp Secondary musicians and the Kalamalka ensemble. The evening’s grand finale was a cooperative and powerful performance of a Star Wars melody, which rattled the rafters and filled the gym space with celestial melodies.
