People are reading more books from the library - but it seems many prefer not to have to carry around paper versions.

The Nakusp Library’s annual general meeting heard that circulation was up 5.5 per cent last year, with a remarkable rise in the number of digital books (e-books and audio books).

Nakusp residents took out 4,728 electronic editions in 2017, 22 per cent more than the previous year.

The library collection also got larger, with 1,354 items added to the physical collection, bringing the total number of items to 23,958.

Those were just some of the statistics presented at the board’s annual general meeting, held on January 28. The Library also elected its new board, including Paula Rogers, Chair; Barbara MacPherson, Vice-Chair; Treasurer, Heather Davidson; Acting Secretary, Heather Davidson, and board members Marilyn McKinnon, Jerry Van Immerzeel, Trish Huesken, and Karen McMillan.

Stepping down is long-time member Shori Smith, who will be replaced by new board member Linda Harrington.

The library has had an exciting year with many programs and additions to its collection. One of the library’s priorities is hosting author readings and in 2017, as well as featuring local writers Barbara MacPherson and Sharon Montgomery, who both had book launches, four other authors were presented: Cea Sunrise Person, Lee Reid, Eileen Pearkes, and Agnes Toews-Andrews.

The library’s Art Series continued with Karen McMillan explaining the history and technique of marbling, followed by a hands-on opportunity for attendees to produce their own marbling masterpieces. Donna Marko presented a Needle Felting Angel workshop and in December, Patty Riley demonstrated how to make Himmeli stars for Christmas. As well, the library collaborated with artists in the community to bring their artwork into our space to add a sense of home.

Social Media Cafes, Book Discussions, Games Nights, Genealogy Club meetings, Blind Date with a Book, Freedom to Read week, Canada Reads, a BC Loggers and a Fire Smart presentation, a writer’s workshop and a Shelving Party rounded out the adult fare.

Mother Goose was an extremely popular program in 2017 for caregivers and their babies and toddlers. For the slightly older children of the community, the library was able to offer 3o craft sessions to keep little hands busy as well as bringing in Leif David for another magnificent magic show.

Dedicated volunteers helped in the running of the library. Weekly circulation desk volunteers donated 425 hours in 2017 and helped to ensure the library hummed along during open hours.

The Nakusp Public Library is generously supported by the Village of Nakusp, a portion of Area K, the Ministry of Education, the Kootenay Library Federation, donations and fund-raising. The staff and board are appreciative of all continued support to ensure the library maintains its open hours and high-quality services.
